The Essence of You

The world uses physical and material measures to judge a person's worth.
Yet, the true measure of those we love and respect
is not counted by looks or possessions.
It is a combination of the quirky and the kind
and the uncommon way they do and say things
that make them unique and dear to us.

It isn't your looks,
it is the comfortable way you present yourself,
that draws me in your direction.

It isn't the way you put your words together,
it is the sound of your voice,
that compels my attention.

It isn't the things that make you laugh,
it is the hearty way you laugh at yourself,
that puts me at ease inside my own skin.

It isn't the house you live in,
it the welcoming hearth you create within,
that bids me to enter your home.

It isn't what you do for a living,
it is the integrity with which you do it,
that commands my respect.

It isn't the dreams you dream,
it is the passion with which you pursue them,
that captures my imagination.

It isn't the people you know or the people you meet,
it is the warmth you extend to friends and strangers alike,
that moves my heart.

It isn't who you love,
it is how fully you love them,
that stirs my soul.

The intangible essence of you infuses a room with fresh air,
and when you are present, everyone breathes easier.

Thank you for diminishing the darkness with your radiant light
and warming the world with your love.
