The Blood Upon The Wall
He pushed his wheel-chair closer
As he raised his tear dimmed- eyes,
He gazed upon the blocks of stone,
His heart caught in a vise.

The names that he was searching for
He could not find at all;
Through the tears falling from his eyes
He saw only blood upon the wall.

With an aching heart, I knelt by his side,
Reaching out his hand to take.
I said "Oh, sir, please let me help"
Then my heart began to break.

There were scars where bullets had pierced his hands,
He had stumps where his legs used to be;
Agonizing grief shook his body
As he raised his sad face to me.

"Would you please help me find the names I
seek?
I must touch them and say goodbye
So many names, so many men;
Oh, why did they have to die?"

"There were no parades to welcome us home;
No medals for bravery we'd earned..
While we were fighting a senseless war
Protestors our flag had burned."

"The blood that was shed on foreign soil
Kept America free from it's stain.
Yet she doesn't care what happens to us;
We're homeless, and always in pain."

As I knelt by his chair, his frail hand in mine
I saw the ravage of war in his eyes.
I saw the countless Americans, as in battle they fell,
I heard the heart-wrenching sound of there cries.

I placed his frail hand over name after name.
He cried out "Goodbye" to each one.
His heart was braking as he asked the dear Lord
For special strength to carry on.

America, please help all these veterans
Who gladly answered your call.
Recognize those who died for you
By placing your hands in the blood on the wall.
